I heard about this dig this

I heard about this dig this morning on Radio 4... They said that they knew it was a shrine as chips of stone were found in the area suggesting people had chipped bits of it off as souvenirs. That's all well and good, but they did used to carve/chisel the megaliths, to give them shape: could it be a remnant of that process?
