Auriga - The Charioteer or Wagoner

 

Astronomy

Situated above and between Gemini and Cancer, the image of a charioteer without a chariot. Its main star being Capella which is about 45 light years from earth. Nonetheless, within this constellation can be found the image of a little goat.

Fixed Star

Capella: Fixed star of the 1st magnitude, situated within the body of the goat, its also refered to as Alayodi a name of Arabic origin. The Greeks assosicated this star with Amalthea who reared the god Jupiter up on goats milk.

The Greeks legend says that this is Erchtonius the 4th king of Atens being the son of Valclcan and Minerva who gave him a place within the northern sky, due to his many inventions. Auriga is said to have invented the charriot along with excelling in the management of horses. However some say it was Bootes who invented the chariot. Nonetheless Auriga was the son of Mercury and the Chariteer to the King of Pisa, Enomaus.
