Mercury was related to Nebu the "Wise" It too, was also a Trickster, being difficult to observe with a tendency to disappear and reappear very quickly.

Was known to be a planet in Sumerian times, some 5,000 years ago

Classical times in Greece Mercury was known by the name of Apollo through its elical rising as the mornng star. It was also known as Hermes when the planet appeared as the evening star. Hermes being the swift messenger to the gods is probely associated with its fast movement across the sky. Hermes mother was Maia.

Rome

The god Mercury often associated with the Caduceus staff has been worshiped since 495BCE at the temple on Aventine Hill in Rome. There appears to be some barrowing from the Greeks as Mercury has the same Mother as Hermes being Maia, and also carried the same staff as Hermes.
